Choosing the perfect lamp: what to look for

Choosing the perfect lamp: what to look for

By: Lisa Comments: 0

Choosing a lamp may seem simple, but it is often more difficult than expected. The range is vast, and what looks good in a photo does not always work as well in your interior. After all, the right lamp does more than simply provide light; it defines the atmosphere, balance and overall look of a room. With these points in mind, you can find the perfect match between style, function and feel.

1. Determine the purpose of the lamp

Before focusing on design, it is important to consider what the lamp needs to do.

Is the light intended for reading, cooking or creating atmosphere? Functional lighting requires a different light intensity to an ambient lamp in the living room.

Combine different types of lighting for a balanced result: general lighting (ceiling lights or track lighting), accent lighting (spotlights or table lamps) and ambient lighting (floor lamps or pendant lights).

2. Choose the right light colour

The colour of light largely determines the atmosphere in your home.

Warm white light (approximately 2700K) resembles the glow of an incandescent bulb, creating a cosy and relaxing feel.

Cool white light (approximately 4000K), on the other hand, is fresher and brighter, similar to daylight. This works well in spaces such as the kitchen, home office or hallway.

Tip: choose bulbs that can be dimmed, so you can easily adjust the light to suit the moment.

No dimmer? A 3-step dimmable bulb is an ideal solution. Thanks to the built-in dimming function, you can set the brightness to three levels: 100%, 50% or 7%. By briefly switching the bulb off and on again, you can easily move between the settings, allowing you to create the right atmosphere instantly, without the need for a separate dimmer.

Want more options?

With a dim-to-warm bulb, the light becomes not only softer but also warmer in colour. As you dim, the colour shifts from bright white to a soft, golden glow—just like a traditional incandescent bulb.

With a smart bulb, you can control everything via an app, from colour to brightness, exactly the way you want it.

3. Consider shape, material and style

The lamp should complement your interior style, but it can also be used to make a statement.

Glass (such as amber or smoked glass) creates a soft, diffused light, while metal and wood add strength and contrast.

A sleek design in glass or black steel suits a modern interior, while natural materials beautifully complement Scandinavian or Japandi styles.

4. Consider the dimensions and height

A lamp only truly comes into its own when the proportions are right. A lamp that is too large can dominate a room, while one that is too small can disappear.

Above a dining table, a lamp should ideally hang 60 to 70 cm above the tabletop, so the light is evenly distributed without causing glare.

In smaller spaces, consider opting for multiple compact pendant lights or a ceiling light to keep the overall look light and balanced.

5. Choose quality that lasts

Invest in lamps that are built to last, both in terms of style and durability. LED lighting and sustainable materials help reduce energy consumption and the need for frequent replacements.

A conscious choice for quality is not only better for the environment, but also for the look of your interior.
