What is a G9 bulb?
A G9 is a push-fit bulb with two thin pins that you push into the lamp holder without turning. Because the bulb itself is very small, the fitting around it can also remain compact and refined. That's why G9 bulbs are often used in designer lamps: the bulb blends into the design rather than becoming the main feature.
Where is a G9 found?
G9 bulbs are used in compact pendant lights and wall lights, as well as small glass globes, travertine and Wabi-Sabi designs, and designer fittings where there isn't room for a larger bulb. The bulb type you need is always listed in your lamp's product details.
What to look for
Pay attention to the maximum wattage of your lamp, as G9 bulbs are often used in small, enclosed spaces. Also check whether you need a dimmable bulb, as this varies between models. Finally, check the size: although the lamp holder is standard, the length of the bulb can vary between models, which can make a difference with a small shade.
Dimming
If you want to adjust the brightness without installing a dimmer, a 3-step dimmable G9 bulb is a handy choice. You can dim it using the ordinary on/off switch. Choose warm white light (around 2700K) for a cosy atmosphere. Some fittings come with a G9 bulb included, which is always stated in the product details.
