Light where there is no power
Your façade usually has a connection, but your shed, fence, garden wall or garage rarely does. A solar wall light is the smart solution: simply screw it in place, and that is it. No cable through the garden, no trench and no electrician. Thanks to the built-in light sensor, it switches on automatically as soon as it gets dark.
Often with a motion sensor
Many solar wall lights have a motion sensor as well as a light sensor. They stay on at a lower brightness and become brighter as soon as you approach. That saves battery power and gives you light exactly when you need it. This is particularly useful by a shed or back entrance: you can easily see where you are going, and the light gets brighter when someone approaches, adding a sense of security.
Mind the position of the panel
How long the lamp stays on depends on how much sunlight the panel receives during the day. With a wall light, that can be trickier than with a garden lamp: a north-facing wall gets very little direct sunlight. Some models therefore have a separate panel on a cable, so you can hang the lamp in the shade and place the panel in the sun. Check the product details to see if the model has this option.
Solar or mains power?
Solar is ideal where there is no power supply. If there is a connection, for example beside your front door, a mains-powered model provides more brightness and reliable performance all year round, including in December. For these, take a look at our outdoor wall lights, or the versions with a sensor.
