Creating an outdoor room

Nothing creates as much atmosphere under a canopy as a pendant light above the table. A ceiling light is mainly functional and sits neatly against the ceiling, while a pendant light hangs lower and brings the light down to the table. Just like above your dining table indoors, but outdoors.

Do you have an electricity power point?

With an outdoor pendant light, this is the first thing to check. If there is a power point in your canopy, you can choose a mains-powered model and have reliable lighting every evening and all year round. If there is no power point, take a look at our decorative outdoor lighting with battery or solar power, which you can hang wherever you like.

No power point above your table?

If your power point is in the wrong place in your canopy, or you do not have one at all, a festoon cable with suspended bulb sockets can be a clever solution. You get light from a single point directly above your table, and you can slide the cable along if you move the table later.

How high should you hang it?

Hang a pendant light 80 to 100 cm above the tabletop. This gives you enough light to see what you are doing without blocking your view of the person opposite you. If you are hanging it outside, bear in mind that it can swing in the wind. Hang it where it cannot knock against a beam, or choose a model with a fixed stem rather than a cord.

What to look for

Pay attention to the stated protection rating (IP rating): wind-driven rain can reach a light even under a canopy, and there can be plenty of moisture in the air in winter. Many models are suitable for an E27 bulb, so you can choose the light colour yourself. Choose warm white light for a cosy outdoor room. If the bulb is visible, an amber glass filament bulb adds a warm glow. Order before 14:00 for same day shipping.
