No trench, no cable

For a ground light on mains power, you often have to lift paving or dig a trench. That is not necessary with a solar ground light: simply place it in your lawn or border and, thanks to the built-in light sensor, it switches on automatically when it gets dark. That makes it a simple way to highlight a façade, tree or shrub.

Perfect for experimenting

Highlighting is a matter of trying things out: how far away should you place the spotlight, and which angle works best? Because there is no cable attached, you can move a solar spotlight just as easily as you put it in place. That way, you can see what works before you install anything permanently. If you like the effect and want more brightness, you can switch to mains power later.

Give the panel plenty of sun

How long the spotlight stays on depends on how much sunlight the panel receives during the day. With a ground light, the panel sits low to the ground, so keep the grass around it short and watch out for planting that grows and casts shade in summer. If the spotlight is placed against a north-facing façade, it will receive little direct sunlight. Some models therefore have a separate panel on a cable, which you can position somewhere sunnier.

What to look for

Pay attention to the stated protection rating (IP rating): the spotlight sits in the ground, where water can collect. Check whether the model is walk-over rated if you are installing it in a path or patio. Solar ground lights generally provide softer, atmospheric light, so mains power is the better choice if you want to light up a mature tree or an entire façade.
