Atmosphere in a line
Where a festoon cable has hanging bulbs and provides real light, string lights are more subtle: a series of small lights that mainly create atmosphere. That makes them ideal for highlighting a line: along a pergola, over a fence, around a tree trunk or along the edge of a canopy. They are not intended to light a table, but they can add the finishing touch to your garden.
What type of string light do you need?
String lights for outdoors are available with or without bulbs and with mains power. Solar versions do not need a socket and charge during the day. Rope lights and LED strips create a continuous line of light. Neon rope gives you an even, flexible neon effect. Party lighting is designed for parties and garden parties. Separate lights or a continuous line?
This is the main choice to make. With string lights, you see separate lights along the cable, creating a subtle, atmospheric effect. With a rope light or LED strip, you get a continuous line of light instead, which looks sleeker and more modern, particularly along an edge or under a step. If you want separate lights like little stars, choose string lights. If you want the lighting to form a continuous line, choose a rope light or LED strip.
Hanging
Drape string lights loosely rather than pulling them tight: a gentle sag looks more natural and puts less strain on the cable. Around a tree, it works particularly well to wind the string around the trunk and larger branches rather than simply laying it over them. Attach it with cable ties or clips, and never pull on the cable itself.
Pay attention to the protection rating
If you use string lights outdoors, pay attention to the stated protection rating (IP rating) and make sure it is suitable for the location. A light under a canopy has different requirements from one hanging in an exposed tree. A string light intended for indoor use should not be used outdoors.
