Set into the wall
With a recessed outdoor wall light, the fitting is built into the wall, so you only see the front and the light. As a result, nothing protrudes, giving you the sleekest look possible. The light does the work, while the fixture itself is barely noticeable.
Where do you use them?
You can use them anywhere that a protruding lamp could get in the way or be vulnerable to damage. For example, along a narrow path or driveway, where you might brush past it with a car or bike. In an outdoor staircase, recessed lights in the steps provide safe lighting without creating an obstacle. Or in a garden wall, where they subtly define a patio with light at knee height.
Plan it in advance
This is the important point: recessing a light requires a cut-out and a cable in the wall, so it is easiest to arrange during construction or renovation. Recessing a light afterwards into an existing façade is considerably more work and is not always advisable with an insulated cavity wall. If you cannot recess a light, surface-mounted wall lights are the logical choice.
What to look for
Pay attention to the installation depth and required cut-out, as well as the stated IP rating. If the light is close to the ground, water can splash onto it, so stricter requirements apply. Use an underground power cable for cables that run underground. Have the installation and connection carried out by a professional.
