Enjoy your patio for longer
Without lighting, your patio becomes difficult to use once the sun goes down. The right lighting lets you enjoy the evening outdoors for longer. The key is to keep the light soft and low. Bright overhead lighting can feel harsh and impersonal, while softer lighting at eye level creates a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Which lights work well on a patio?
Festoon lighting is a classic choice above a patio or under a canopy. String lights add subtle ambient lighting along a fence or pergola. Wall lights mounted on the outside wall provide light without the need for hanging cables. Rechargeable table lamps add atmosphere to the table without trailing cables.
Where will you hang your lights?
When installing festoon lighting, think about where you will attach it. A canopy, pergola or two suitable walls can provide ideal fixing points. If these aren't available, you could use poles or screw-in hooks. Avoid pulling the cable too tight; a slight sag looks better and puts less strain on it. Make sure the electrical connection is in a safe, suitable location, preferably using an outdoor socket.
Creating the right atmosphere
Choose warm white light for a cosy evening outdoors, or extra warm white for a candlelight effect. If you want to adjust the brightness, choose an IP44 dimmer set designed for outdoor use. A dusk sensor is another useful option, automatically switching your patio lights on as it gets dark. Whatever lighting you choose for your patio, always check the stated protection rating (IP rating) to make sure it is suitable for outdoor use.
