What is a tube light?
A tube light is an elongated E14 bulb: instead of the classic globe shape, it has a straight, tubular form. The filament runs the whole length, giving you a line of light rather than a single point. In the small E14 fitting, this creates a particularly slim, elegant effect, more subtle than an E27 tube light.
Where does it come into its own?
Only where you can see it, because the shape is the whole point. Think of a multi-light pendant light with open or transparent globes, a wall light that shows off the bulb, or a designer piece where the bulb is part of the design. In a closed or opal-white shade there's little benefit, as you won't see the shape anyway.
Pay attention to the length
With an ordinary bulb you tend to look at the diameter, but with a tube light it's mainly the length that matters. Measure whether the bulb will fit in or under your fitting, and bear in mind that it extends further than a globe-shaped bulb. With multi-light fittings in particular, you want all the bulbs to hang freely. The exact dimensions are listed in the product details.
Glass and dimming
Tube lights come in clear glass for a fresh look and amber glass for a warm, vintage glow. They are dimmable with an external dimmer, and some versions are 3-step dimmable. Choose warm white light (around 2700K) for a cosy atmosphere.
