What is a downlight?

A downlight directs light downwards, making it a practical choice for lighting specific areas such as workspaces, aisles and walkways. In a warehouse or commercial building, downlights are often used in areas with lower ceilings, such as counters, packing tables, corridors and staff canteens.

Downlights or high bay lights?

The right choice depends largely on the ceiling height. For higher ceilings, a powerful high bay light can help ensure the light reaches the floor. In spaces with lower ceilings, downlights are often a better choice, helping provide sufficient light without excessive brightness or glare. Your ceiling height is a good starting point when deciding which type of fitting to choose.

What should you consider?

Choose the light output and beam angle to suit the area. A narrower beam can work well for aisles, while a wider beam is often better for workspaces. In damp or dusty environments, check the stated protection rating (IP rating) to ensure the fitting is suitable. Neutral white light at around 4000K is a common choice for workspaces. If people work at screens, the UGR value is also worth considering, as it indicates the level of discomfort caused by glare.

Recessed or surface-mounted?

If you have a suspended or lowered ceiling with enough space above it, recessed downlights offer a neat, discreet finish.
