Out of reach and out of the way
In a children's room, there's plenty of playing, jumping and building going on. A ceiling light is therefore often the safest choice for general lighting: it sits neatly against the ceiling, out of reach, with no cord for anyone to pull on. It also spreads light evenly throughout the room, which is useful when your child is playing on the floor.
Soft light, even when lying down
Just as in a bedroom, your child lies underneath the light. So choose a model where the bulb isn't directly visible, for example with a fabric shade or opal-white glass. These spread the light softly and evenly, so it isn't too bright in their eyes at bedtime.
Growing with your child
A children's room changes quickly: from nursery to toddler's room to teenager's room. So choose a neutral model that will still suit the room in five years' time, rather than a themed lamp your child may soon grow out of. You can add playful touches more easily with a table lamp or a night light, which are easier to replace.
Light and bulb
Choose warm white light (around 2700K) for the evening. During the day, you may want brighter light for playing and crafts. A dimmable model or a 3-step dimmable light bulb gives you both without having to install anything. If you have a sloping roof or limited ceiling height, take a look at the flush ceiling lights.
