Light from the ground
A ground light sits flush with your paving, lawn or border and shines upwards. During the day, you barely notice it, while in the evening it can highlight a façade, tree, wall or pillar. This upward light creates a dramatic effect that you do not get with an ordinary spotlight from above: the shadows fall differently, and the texture of brick or bark stands out more clearly.
Solar or mains power?
Solar ground lights need no wiring and can be installed straight away. Mains-powered ground lights provide more brightness and the same performance every evening. For a shrub or small feature, solar is fine; to really light up an entire façade or mature tree, mains power is the better choice.
What to look for
Pay close attention to the stated protection rating (IP rating): a ground light sits in the paving or ground, where water can collect after a shower, so it needs good protection against moisture. Make sure there is good drainage around the spotlight. Aim the beam so that it grazes along your façade or tree rather than pointing straight up into the sky: this is more effective and causes less light nuisance. Have the installation carried out by a professional.
