Highlighting without digging

A garden spotlight usually belongs at the back of the garden, by a tree or among the planting, where there is often no power supply nearby. With a solar spotlight, you don't need one: simply push it into the ground, aim it upwards and, thanks to the built-in light sensor, it switches on automatically when it gets dark. No trench, no underground cable, no electrician.

Ideal for trying things out

Highlighting is a matter of trying things out: which tree works, which angle looks best and how far from the trunk should you place the spotlight? Because there is no cable attached, you can move a solar spotlight just as easily as you put it in place. That way, you can see what works before you install anything permanently. If you like the effect and want more brightness, you can still switch to mains power.

Mind the sun and the shade

Here is the familiar challenge with solar garden spotlights: you want the spotlight under a tree, but the panel needs sunlight. Some models therefore have a separate panel on a cable, so you can place the spotlight in the shade and the panel somewhere sunny. Check the product details to see if the model has this option. Also keep in mind that a tree casts more shade in summer than in spring.

Atmosphere, not a floodlight

A solar garden spotlight works well for highlighting a shrub, plant or small object. For a mature tree or an entire façade, the brightness is usually too limited, so mains power is the better choice. How long the spotlight stays on depends on how much sunlight the panel receives during the day, and it will usually stay on for less time in winter.
