When you have nothing to attach it to

With a festoon cable, the question is always: what can you attach it to? A canopy, pergola or two façades are ideal, but not everyone has these options. If your patio is in the middle of the garden, or you want lighting above the lawn, poles offer a simple solution. You can create your own hanging points exactly where you need them.

Where do you place them?

Think about the layout before you start. Two poles opposite each other create a straight line above your table, while four poles can create a square or zigzag above your patio. You can also combine poles with existing attachment points, for example with one side attached to the façade and the other to a pole. When deciding where to position them, keep walking routes in mind. You do not want anyone to trip over a pole or guy line.

Do not string it too tightly

A festoon cable looks best with a slight curve, and this is also better for the cable. If you string it completely straight and tight, it puts extra tension on the plug, end cap and attachment points. A gentle curve reduces this tension and gives the lighting a more natural, atmospheric look. Leave a little slack when hanging the cable so it can move slightly in the wind.

Setting it up firmly

Make sure the poles are firmly secured, especially if the festoon cable spans a longer distance. Some poles are placed in a parasol base, while others are secured to a fence or wall. In an exposed location, choose a heavier base and support the cable at more points so it can withstand strong gusts of wind. This helps you enjoy your festoon lighting safely throughout the season.
