Large spaces and high ceilings

Warehouses have different lighting requirements from offices and homes. With high ceilings and large floor areas, the lighting needs to reach the floor and provide good visibility between storage racks. Clear, consistent lighting is particularly important in areas where people operate forklifts or handle materials, helping them work safely.

Which lights do you need?

High bay lights are designed to provide powerful lighting in spaces with high ceilings. LED downlights direct light downwards and can be suitable for lower ceilings and aisles. Don't overlook emergency lighting, either. In a windowless warehouse, a power cut can leave the space in complete darkness.

What should you consider?

The height of your ceiling determines which type of warehouse light is most suitable and how widely the light needs to spread. Higher ceilings may require a narrower beam to direct enough light towards the floor. You should also consider the size of the area and the layout of the storage racks. Lighting along the aisles may need to be arranged differently from lighting in open areas. In dusty or damp environments, check the stated protection rating (IP rating) to ensure the fittings are suitable.

Reducing energy costs

Warehouse lighting is often switched on for long periods, so energy efficiency can make a significant difference to running costs. LED lighting uses less electricity than traditional lighting and has a long lifespan, helping to reduce both energy use and maintenance, particularly where fittings are mounted high up. You could also consider a motion detector for areas that are not in constant use, so the lights are only on when needed.
