Flat instead of deep
A GX53 is a flat, round bulb with a diameter of 53 mm. While an ordinary spotlight bulb protrudes from the fitting, a GX53 is flat like a disc. That makes it ideal for spaces where there is very little room above the ceiling. You place it in the lamp holder and turn it a quarter turn to lock it in place.
Where do you use it?
GX53 bulbs are useful wherever installation depth is limited, such as in a concrete ceiling with a shallow cut-out, a lowered ceiling with little space above it, or a cabinet where you want to build in lighting. You can also find GX53 bulbs in furniture and alcoves. If you have enough space, an ordinary GU10 spotlight is usually the more practical choice, as there is a wider choice of light colours and beam angles.
Measure your installation depth
Before ordering, measure how much space you have above the ceiling or inside your cabinet, and check the required cut-out size. The lamp holder needs to fit too. The dimensions are listed for each bulb and fitting in the product details. If you cannot recess the fitting at all, take a look at the surface-mounted spotlights.
Light colour
Choose warm white light (around 2700K) for a living space, and cool white for a kitchen, storage room or work space. A GX53 usually spreads light more widely than a concentrated spotlight, making it a good choice for general lighting. If you use the bulb in a damp space, pay attention to the protection rating of the fitting.
