What are bathroom spotlights?
These recessed spotlights have an IP44 rating, making them protected against splashing water and suitable for use in damp spaces. This makes them a practical choice for bathrooms and other areas where there may be moisture. The neutral colours of these spotlights make them easy to combine with different bathroom styles. As the fitting is recessed into the ceiling, it stays largely out of sight, creating a sleek and uncluttered look in a room that often already has plenty of tiles and lines.
Why choose a splashproof spotlight?
Bathrooms are exposed to moisture, steam and splashing water. Ordinary spotlights may not provide the level of protection needed in these conditions. An IP44-rated spotlight is protected against splashing water from any direction, making it suitable for use in certain damp areas. These spotlights can also be a good choice above a kitchen worktop, in a toilet or in a utility room.
What to consider when positioning bathroom spotlights
The required IP rating depends on where the spotlight is positioned in your bathroom. The closer it is to a bath or shower, the stricter the requirements. IP44 is suitable for certain splash zones, such as around a washbasin or mirror, but the exact requirements depend on the location. If you want to install a spotlight directly above a bath or shower, always check which IP rating is required under the applicable regulations.
Also consider the installation depth and required cut-out size. It is worth planning the number and position of your spotlights in advance. Around the washbasin, for example, you want even lighting that does not cast unwanted shadows across your face.
Which light source do you choose?
Some bathroom spotlights have a GU10 lamp holder, allowing you to choose the bulb yourself. Other models have integrated LED, sometimes with an adjustable colour temperature or a dim-to-warm function. With dim-to-warm lighting, the colour temperature becomes warmer as you dim the light.
Cool white light can work well around the mirror, as it provides clear lighting when you are getting ready. Around the bath, warm white light creates a softer and more relaxing atmosphere. The required IP rating and the type of bulb or integrated LED are listed in the specifications for each spotlight.
