Cabinet lighting

Cabinet lighting is useful for illuminating your cupboard, especially if the contents of the cupboard are not sufficiently lit to see properly. For example, if the kitchen light does not shine inside, or the angle of the drawer means that you cannot really see what is in the cupboard.

In addition, it can also be nice to have more lighting. That way, you can find what you need in the cupboard a little faster.

In general, our cabinet lighting is most commonly used in kitchen and wardrobe cupboards. This makes sense, as these are two types of cupboards that you use almost every day to put things in or take things out.

What type of cabinet lighting do you have?

We have basically every type of cabinet lighting you could need. In general, the lighting can be divided into the following types:

  • Shape: round, square, rectangular and elongated. This ensures that you can find the right design for the drawer/cupboard where you want to install the lighting.
  • Dimmable: it can be useful if the lighting is dimmable. This allows you to adjust the light intensity. If the lighting is at full strength, it can sometimes provide sufficient light during the day, but be a little too bright in the evening.
  • Sensor: because you basically only need the cabinet lighting when you open the cabinet door, it is useful to choose a model with a door sensor.
  • Wireless/mains powered: depending on how you want to install the lighting, you can choose models that run on mains power or Battery-powered.

What are LED cabinet lighting made of?

All our cabinet lighting is made of aluminium and polycarbonate. The aluminium ensures the frame is sturdy. The polycarbonate is on the LED lamp, so that the light can pass through properly, while the frame remains sturdy.

All models have integrated LED lights. We chose LED lights because they consume 90% less power than traditional incandescent bulbs and 85% less than halogen bulbs. LEDs also make it easier to distribute the light more evenly from the lamp.

LEDs are also better for the environment because they consume less power. Less energy is wasted on heat, which is very useful if you have the lights hanging close to your clothes or next to the wood in your kitchen cupboard.

Is there also cabinet lighting with a sensor?

Yes, you can choose a model with a sensor for every type of light. Sensors are generally useful for lighting, but they are especially useful for cabinet lighting.

This is because in 80% of cases, you only want the cabinet lighting on when you are taking something out of the cabinet. There is no point in having the lighting on when the cabinet door is closed.

The most popular sensor is the door sensor. This ensures that the lighting comes on when the door is opened. And the lighting turns off when the door is closed again. This is done by a handy little sensor that you place between the door (don't worry: the sensor is small, so the door will still close). It senses the pressure of the door, and when there is pressure, the lighting stays off. When the pressure is released, the lighting turns on.

In addition to door sensors, we also have cabinet lighting with motion sensors. As the name suggests, the sensor registers movement. So when you come close, the lights turn on. This is ideal for use with lighting that is not completely hidden in the cabinet, such as under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen. Or in a walk-in wardrobe in the bedroom.

What exactly is a touch dimmer switch?

As you may have seen, some models feature a touch dimmer. This is basically a standard dimmer switch, but instead of using a switch to adjust the light intensity, you do so by touching it. Its use is self-explanatory.

How to make the right choice:

Because there are various cabinet lighting options to choose from, it is useful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Where are you going to install the cabinet lighting, and are there certain criteria for when the lighting should turn on? If the cabinet lighting is going to be installed in a cabinet where you only need light when the door is open, it is useful to choose lighting with a door sensor. If it is in a walk-in wardrobe, or if it is under-cabinet lighting, a motion sensor or no sensor is useful.
  • How much space do you have to install each individual light? If you have a lot of space, you can choose a larger model. If you have limited space, an elongated model may be more convenient.
  • Do you want mains-powered or battery-powered lighting? If the lighting only needs to be on for a few minutes a day, then battery or rechargeable battery power is sufficient. But if the lighting is on for hours a day, then it is more convenient to opt for mains power.
  • How many lights do you need? If you need more lights, we recommend choosing a set. This is cheaper than ordering them separately, and you will also have all the accessories you need (such as the LED driver, plug and, if necessary, the sensor or touch dimmer).

How do you install surface-mounted cabinet lighting?

It is quite simple to install cabinet lighting. First, you need to choose where you want to hang the lighting. Then you can attach the lights with small screws (included). We have specifically chosen not to use adhesive mounting. This is less sturdy and durable than traditional screw mounting.

If you have mains-powered lighting, you will need to neatly conceal the wires. Sometimes this can be done by feeding them through a small gap in the cabinet, but sometimes you will need to make a small hole for this. Ensure that all wires are securely connected to the driver.

If you have a touch dimmer or sensor, you will also need to connect it to the driver and then, of course, attach it. A door sensor is attached between the door that opens and closes. The touch dimmer and Motion sensor can be attached to the wall. If you have a touch dimmer with magnetic attachment, you can attach it to a metal surface. This is useful for the refrigerator, for example.

Finally, you will need to connect the driver to the mains. You can do this by plugging the cable with the plug into the socket.
